With more than 17.5 million acres of forestland and 3,500 miles of coastline, Maine offers countless opportunities to explore the abundant areas that are home to wildlife and other natural wonders. And because of the state’s ongoing investment in protecting that land — along with the beaches, mountains, and waterways that grace the landscape — Maine is a particularly fruitful place to build an outdoor career.

The Maine TREE Foundation’s latest report, “The Maine Outdoor Career Guide: Exploring Career Pathways to Adventure and Sustainability in the Pine Tree State,” provides an in-depth look at careers that “benefit our communities, support Maine’s economy, and prioritize the ability of future generations to utilize natural resources sustainably.”

The guide covers careers in:

  • Forestry and sustainable use, including logging professionals and forest rangers
  • Conservation and natural resources management, including ecologists, wildlife biologists, and game wardens
  • Ecotourism, including park rangers and registered guides

Along with outlining job descriptions, requirements, and salary ranges for each role, the guide offers insight on how roles connect to environmental protection initiatives. Altogether, the guide represents both a comprehensive look at opportunities for young professionals and an unwavering dedication to protecting Maine’s abundant natural environment.
