Author School Visit Mini Grants are intended to help k-12 schools fund authors who will share their writing processes, story development and research experiences, while inspiring students to read, write and/or illustrate. Although many authors are amazing inspirational speakers and have great messages to share, we are interested in highlighting the writing connection for students.

  • Author Visit Grant award asks can range from $300 to $800.

  • To be eligible for an Author Visit Grant from the Onion Foundation, the application must be initiated by someone affiliated with the school and the school must be in the state of Maine.

  • A portion of the author visit must happen during the school day.  Eliminating transportation and location barriers assures access for children who otherwise might not be able to attend an author event.

  • The event may occur in a public library or other local venue if students are transported to the event space during the school day.

  • A school may apply for one author visit grant annually.
